Great article. Beauty and the Beast was always my favorite Disney movie and I'm reading a lot of John Granger (and Titus Burckhardt and Lyndy abraham) lately so this was right up my alley!https://www.blogger.com/profile/05855429142134831353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-45512771117156542692013-12-07T11:48:37.033-08:002013-12-07T11:48:37.033-08:00I don't think you're over-thinking this at...I don't think you're over-thinking this at all. From a Jungian perspective, the images of the alchemical opus emerge from deep in the subconscious and reflect archetypal realities that can manifest regardless of the intentions of the authors.

The best writer I've ever read on the subject of alchemy & archetypes is Edward Edinger, America's foremost Jungian scholar. Most of his books are out of print, but you can still find them on Amazon. I especially recommend "The Mysterium Lectures" & "Anatomy of the Psyche: Alchemical Symbolism in Psychotherapy."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-51867107513512241462013-03-23T07:24:38.378-07:002013-03-23T07:24:38.378-07:00Enjoyed reading this very much. c:Enjoyed reading this very much. c:Christiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107748184124761940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-18295634070539698012013-02-27T14:38:44.900-08:002013-02-27T14:38:44.900-08:00This was a long one, so thank you for reading, Joh...This was a long one, so thank you for reading, John! The rites of passage theory isn't one I've come across yet, but I quite like it. It seems like it be a nice way of looking at texts that seem, but are not quite, alchemical. It also seems like the Hero's Journey- once you know about it, you'll be seeing it everywhere because its an important part of what makes us human and what makes human storytelling so interesting. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05536373669811879997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-15851034420365547232013-02-25T18:37:37.337-08:002013-02-25T18:37:37.337-08:00Thanks for sharing this theory. In the broadest sense, it reminds me of that old anthropological theory of rites of passage (deaggregation, liminality, reaggregation). But the color-associations and the "resolution of contraries" definitely go beyond that theory, as far as I'm aware.

I think it would hard to decide whether this is some kind of deep, unconscious parallel or something more intentional. Good luck with the research!John Pylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14379211215949426912noreply@blogger.com
