For both Lewis and Rowling, faith and imagination are essential for human flourishing, and you can read their stories as subtle critiques of the modernist idea that the only real things are what we can see with our eyes. I also appreciate the tone of this post, enthusiastic and full of a sense of wonder :)Sketches by Bozehttp://thetalkingllama.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-13459499454355792552013-08-02T13:40:25.464-07:002013-08-02T13:40:25.464-07:00Thanks!! It's certainly worth looking at over and over again. It's interesting how Uncle Andrew's materialist magic is portrayed as mundane at best, but Harry's isn't.Christiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107748184124761940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-52587205922614846572013-06-16T14:08:30.392-07:002013-06-16T14:08:30.392-07:00Thank you both!!!

Especially as Uncle Andrew is a magician and really ought to be able to see beyond his own pettiness - after all he Knows there is something powerful out there! And Mr. Dursley - while not pursuing magic as Andrew does - can't hide from it in reality either, knowing as he does the not so distant world his sister-in-law called home.

It's a funny comparison too, because I see a lot of the secularist in both Uncle Andrew's magic and in the magic Mr. Dursley is running from..almost a taste of what in another book (??Hideous Strength???..Lewis calls the 'materialist magician'..is that Hideous Strength..he certainly brings it out in that book, but it may have been Screwtape..I think it is Screwtape!..He's kind of obsessed with the idea) because of the lack of superstitions, of beliefs and practices that flow with the seasons, and the lack of mystery in the magic of both Uncle Andrew and Harry..Wow..I think if I can just organize what I just thought out into something coherent, I might have a post to share soon.

Anyway, I LOVED your thoughts, and I was sort of bummed you LeakyCon in Portland wasn't in MY Portland :( Mashahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943998810222103926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1471028991399505320.post-47534113880603713292013-05-24T21:50:12.196-07:002013-05-24T21:50:12.196-07:00I love the comparison to Uncle Andrew!! Very apt.

Also, I hadn't thought about this being really our only experience in Mr. Dursley's head. I do enjoy Rowling's inside joking with the reader here. :)

You managed to find some beautiful art, too. And I'm so glad you posted on the read-through. This is fun. :D

Best of luck at LeakyCon--that's awesome!Jenna St. Hilairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04474588706124865006noreply@blogger.com
